Resisting hatred, celebrating heritage

October, 2024

As we embark on Hispanic Heritage Month, we honor the rich tapestry of cultures, histories of journeys, memories made, and contributions that shape our communities. This month is a time to celebrate the voices and experiences of Hispanic and Latinx individuals, recognizing their impact on Western New York. In the spirit of solidarity, let’s embrace the diverse narratives that unite us, fostering understanding and respect.

Western New York has received new families and each one brings their own life experiences filled with the hurdles of life, diverse flavors, and a rich history that intertwines many our countries. While we celebrate diversity, we must also reflect on our current political landscape. With the looming election, we must remind ourselves what is really at stake and who will be affected adversely. We cannot stand for anti-immigrant rhetoric, which puts folks in unsafe situation. Racism and discrimination has not place in our communities.

In the spirit of solidarity, let’s come together to learn from one another, share our experiences, and uplift the stories that often go unheard. Each of us brings a unique perspective that contributes to our collective strength. Personally, I cherish the moments of connection that remind me of our common humanity—whether through music, art, or simply a shared meal.

Let’s take this time to not only celebrate but to also deepen our understanding of one another. Together, we can build a future that embraces diversity and fosters inclusion for all. Happy Hispanic Heritage Month!
