Remembering our Roots
October, 2023
ustice for Migrant Families grew out of community response on immigrant worker rights, seven years ago in October of 2016. It is a story that we have often told in sharing who we are and where we come from, including that those workers then joined in solidarity as Muslim immigrants then came under attack from racist travel bans. And, it is a story that continues; both the community response and solidarity, and also the ongoing endangerment and exploitation of immigrant workers.
Two of us just returned from time with the statewide Excluded Workers coalition, which has expanded to include freelance workers and people who are recently released from detention, prison or jail; check out this article from the Spring on the hopeful solidarity taking place. On the home front, JFMF community support requests coming in demonstrate that the need for worker support remains a necessity. Check out some organizing events this month on these themes.
And, we need value and joy beyond our status as workers as well. A few joys this week: a work permit that came in the mail; housing for a family at last; volunteers who are sorting and prepping donations to go out as I write. We are currently inviting only monetary or gift card donations to redistribute to community members.
With gratitude,
