Under the sap, ice is melting
February 2023
For everyone who cares about people and humanity, it continues to be hard times. It has certainly been hard times for Buffalo as a city, where winter storms, a legacy of racism and disinvestment, and unprecedented events have left us reeling. It is the perfect time to despair. We are in the last throes of winter here.
Today marks the 20th anniversary of the creation of the Department of Homeland Security, and this week we are witnessing another assault on human rights as Biden proposes dismantling asylum.
This time of year is amazing. As ice caps the soils, sap rises in the trees and carries nutrients from deep into the earth, bringing sweetness we can taste. The tree blood is surging and so is ours, in every effort at humanization, connection, welcome and joy and resistance.
I know, this is a big turn from 'we are in the throes of winter', but it is what I believe and it is why I stay. It is why you continue to participate, to read, learn, act, donate- whatever you are able to do on a given day. Please read on to hear, both about the winter ice and the movement breaking through. If you are in Buffalo, and weather permitting, join us for our music fundraiser on Friday. And if not, donate to support our work here.
